Abednego in Hebrew means the 'Servant of Nego', the Babylonian god of wisdom. Abednego, with Shadrach and Meshach, were cast into the fiery furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar in 600BC. Grant Burge named the flagship and icon Shiraz Meshach (after his great grandfather Meshach Burge 1843-1942), and the icon Cabernet Sauvignon Shadrach (inspired by the story). Our finest blend of traditional Barossa varieties, Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvedre has been named 'Abednego'.
The 2014 Abednego is a richly flavoured and elegantly structured wine with aromas of damp earth, cumin, raspberries accompanied by fennel bulb. A beautifully balanced palate with fine tannin providing very good texture and excellent length, complemented by flavours of plum, spice, and liquorice with hints of vanilla. The dense, mouth-filling mid-palate and long, textural finish combine to create a wine that is rich and elegant, that will sit beautifully on any table now, or cellar gracefully for 9-17 years.
Above-average winter rainfall but dry spring; poor fruit set lead to lighter crop levels while two heatwaves through January lead to an early season. Due to the dry growing season in 2014, crop levels were very low. However, they produced extremely high-quality red wines with great colour and magnificent structure.
